The three key steps to a successful Giclée print: 1) High end digital capture of the original artwork 2) File setup, colour match to the original 3) Print output
High quality print output at or near original size requires professionally produced high resolution files. Questions to ask your current provider should include
a) what film format was used to photograph my artwork? If the answer is anything other than large or medium format then it will not be suitable for large print output.
b) what digital camera format was used to photograph my artwork? If the answer is anything other than a high end studio digital scanning or capture back that produces an non-interpolated file size of a minimum of 50-60mb then the file is unlikely to be suitable for large print output.
Snake oil warning! - some operators use digital slr cameras and claim that the artwork has been "scanned". We often get to see these files and know - if in doubt ask to view their large format flatbed art scanner.
